One of the ideas we liked from the Stiles book was a "secret" hatch type door in the floor. The uphill side of the platform was a good place to locate it because of access from below and the flooring scraps we had left. Elena and Emma helped me figure out how large an opening we needed, then I framed it in and reached back into the recesses of geometry to puzzle out the plywood shapes. One thing I didn't think about was that the plywood hatch itself wasn't really strong enough to support lots of weight because of the size of the opening. Hence, the extra bracing on the bottom of the hatch to stiffen it up.
The hatch was also the first place in which I reused something from the house. The hinges came from a pair of wooden, bi-fold doors that we removed from Evan's room. More on those doors later...
